Match Report - Mens Match Away to PVC Friday 14th October 2011

The first match of the new season saw the mens team travelling to leicester to play against PVC with a whole new bunch of faces that had not played/trained (as a team) together before. The players were...

Setter - Bjorn / Bryan

Middle - Chris / Huw
Outside - Grant / Paolo

After a short discussion on what basics were to be concentrated on we took to the court and started with passion and energy that more than made up for the lack team training pre-season.  After losing the first 9 points the team started to pull together and raised their game to finish the first set 14 -25.

The 2nd set saw the team soon get down to business and matched a seasoned PVC (10 players) team point for point with several flurries of points to take us to 15 - 16 ...  unfortunately PVC honed in on our inexperience and took 6 straight points to make it 15 - 22.  The set finished 18 - 25.

The third set started well with us leading 7 - 6 however PVC managed to hit us again a couple of times which saw us battle to 12 - 21 and eventually ended 14 - 25

Summary - Losing 0- 3 didn't really do us justice.. the decidng factor was the team not playing together before

Blocking  - We could all feel that we were matching them play for play with some excellent blocking especially from our middles Huw and Chris.

Setting - Needs some improvement (mine) but there were excellent examples of co-ordination which saw all of us spiking well

Serving - Generally good with a few blips but nothing of concern (excellent placement by Bjorn saw some cheeky points being gained)

Hitting - some good action saw the team put PVC under pressure often with spikes they just couldn't answer back to... with an all round mixture of hitting through middle / outside and back court

Bryan

Ps. Having 30 mins of court time left allowed us to play a 4th set --- we won 27 - 25 .
